Ring Smart Alerts For The Same Event? How To Troubleshoot
I’ve been experiencing issues with my Ring Video Doorbell recently. The doorbell has become unreliable in detecting people, and sometimes it even fails to detect someone at the front door despite having Ring smart alerts enabled. I suspect it might be an internet problem, and the delayed notifications surprised me. After much deliberation, I eventually found a solution, which I will share.

What Are Ring Smart Alerts
Unlike traditional notifications, Ring smart alerts send a snapshot of the visitor. Smart Ring alerts are of two types: custom event alerts and package alerts that you can customize.
Ring introduced Ring Doorbell smart alerts in 2021, which preceded their notification features like Motion Warning, Motion Alerts, Quick Replies, etc. The two Ring smart alerts explained briefly below.
Custom Event Alerts
Custom Event Alerts on your Ring Spotlight Cam Battery send notifications per your specific needs. For instance, you can capture images of your garage door in open and closed states during setup, and the camera will recognize the difference, sending you Custom Alerts when it changes. This personalized feature eliminates the need for post-departure doubts, like whether you left the door open.
Custom Event Alerts are only available for Ring Spotlight Cam Battery models, and they need a Ring Protect Plan, which starts at $3/month.
Package Alerts
Package Alerts are a helpful feature that lets you create a special zone, like your front porch, to get notifications when a package arrives. You’ll get a clear “Package Alert” notification when a package is delivered, so you can easily track your deliveries in the Ring App.
If you’ve got Alexa Greetings set up on your Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2, Alexa can even guide delivery drivers on where to leave your package within your chosen zone. Package Alerts are now available for Ring Video Doorbells and require a subscription to the Ring Protect Plan.
How To Enable Ring Smart Alerts
- Open the menu by tapping the icon with three horizontal lines (≡) at the screen’s top left corner.
- Select “Devices” from the menu.
- Choose the Ring device you wish to configure.
- Tap on “Motion Settings” in the device settings.
- Look for “Smart Alerts” and tap on it.
- Toggle the switch to “Enable Feature.”
- Tap “Continue” to proceed.
- Select your preferred notification settings for “Person” and “Other Motion.”
Ring Smart Alerts Missing
If your Ring smart alerts are missing, you should check if they are enabled in the first place. Also, you won’t get a notification if you are not connected to the WiFi, as the Ring device and Ring app don’t work without WiFi.
Sometimes, you wonder if you should keep Ring smart alerts on or off due to receiving multiple notifications for the same event. In such a case, you can try the following troubleshooting.
Try On/Off Smart Alerts Ring
One of the easy ways is to turn off the Ring smart alerts and turn them back on. This Ring smart alerts on or off method takes a minute and is easy to perform. You can update the Ring app before turning off the smart alerts on Ring.
Uninstall And Reinstall The Ring App
Uninstalling and reinstalling the Ring app can be a straightforward solution for addressing the issue of receiving multiple notification alerts for the same event. When you uninstall and reinstall the app, you refresh its settings and clear out any potential glitches or cached data that might be causing the problem.
If you are frustrated by getting too many notifications for the same event, consider trying this quick and effective troubleshooting step. Otherwise, you can power the recycle Ring doorbell.
Check for VPN and Custom Settings
Make sure to deactivate any VPN on your smartphone, as it can occasionally disrupt the delivery of Ring notifications. Review your Ring device for any custom accessibility settings or third-party applications that might affect your alerts’ functioning.
If you identify any such settings or apps, disable or uninstall them as required to ensure that you receive only one notification for the same event.
Troubleshooting Android Apps
Check if other Android apps could conflict with the Ring app if you use an Android device. If you use such apps, consider disabling or uninstalling them to see if it resolves the issue. The following Android apps may cause issues for you.
Android Apps | Android Apps |
360 Security | 360 Battery Plus |
AdGuard | All-In-One Toolbox |
Avast Clean-up and Boost | AVG AntiVirus |
Booster Kit | Clean Master |
Check RSSI and Connectivity
You can check your Ring device’s RSSI (Signal Strength). If the signal strength is weak, you may receive multiple Ring smart alerts for the same event. It is frustrating, especially if you have connected to Ring Chime or Chime Pro, and it chimes, besides receiving multiple notifications on the Ring app.
You can try the following test mentioned at the bottom of the article to check the difference between WiFi and cellular data on your mobile device to see if one connection method performs better than the other regarding notifications.
Power Recycle The Ring Device
- 1. Power cycle your device:
- For devices with removable batteries, remove and reinsert the battery.
- Press and hold the setup button for 20 seconds for devices with non-removable batteries.
- For hardwired devices (e.g., Pro, Floodlight Cam, Spotlight Cam Wired), press and hold the setup button for 20 seconds.
- 2. Once the power cycle is complete, open the Ring app.
- 3. Navigate to the Main Menu.
- 4. Select “Set Up a Device.”
- 5. Ensure you perform this setup from the owner’s account, as only the owner can reset the device to re-establish a connection.
Conclusion
As evident from the above discussion, there’s an issue with the Ring app and the Ring smart alerts, as it is a software glitch. Ring may be smart enough to make efficient home security systems, but it could be more efficient to resolve the software glitches at its end.
However, you can try the above steps if your Ring smart alerts missing. Many people also complain about Ring smart alerts missing, but you can avoid this issue using rich notifications as it enable you to distinguish between People and Other Objects.
